Based at Vellor in Koyattom, Hindustan Newsprint Ltd (HNL), one of the subsidiaries of Hindustan Paper Carporation (HPC), has recently launched their Expansion-cum-Diversification Project (EDP) and diversified their operation from the single product portfolio of newsprint production to writing and printing paper (WPP) of production by creating a swing-facility with the exhisting facility of newspaper production.

The launch of the project is the part of their striving plan to be one of dominant players in the Indian pulp & paper industry with a wide range of product grades from newsprint to premium film coated varieties of 50-100 gsm for writing & printing grades. There is a total production capacity of 280,000 MT per annum – scales under the plan which is comparable with the best players in the industry. The company has presently an installed capacity of 1,00,000 MT per annum for producing 49 – 45 gsm newsprint.

Under the Expansion-cum-Diversification project they are requiring paper machine for the product grades including cream wove NSS/maplitho/copier/film coated with swing facility to produce newsprint also. Also there are plans to build a de-inking plant having capacity of average daily production of additional 300 MT of pulp, from the raw material procured mainly from international sources. All the new facilities for the project shall be installed at the existing site by optimally utilizing the available space. Proposed technologies for the project ensure environment friendly processes which comply with all the existing and forthcoming environmental regulations/guidelines.

Under the increased economic activity and post-commissioning operation of the proposed project they will provide impulse to further economic activities in Kottayam and neighbouring districts. Development of industries/establishments will promote sourcing of basic inputs and give fillip to the prospects of connected industries in the region – TCC, KRL, HOCL etc. Currently finer varieties of paper grades are sourced from other states – the project will provide self sufficiency for the state in this regard including generating considerable employment and entrepreneurial opportunities.
