Editor – S K Khurana In the current competitive and sluggish atmosphere, the printing businesses need revamping by reorganizing the whole operations as per the changing requirement of the market. Over the years, most of the printers in India have adequately expanded their production capacities by hugely investing in state-of-the-art equipments in all segments of their printing facilities. But owing to obvious reasons, workflow volume could not be enhanced equally. Resultantly, printers continue facing challenges to optimally utilize their increased productions capacity to ensure timely return on the investments and profitability for the sake of long term viability of their business.

Nevertheless, changing adaptably is the best possible option to survive effectively for all, with printers as no exception. Undoubtedly, today shifting towards process revamping, multi-tasking, right sizing of manpower, minimizing waste, rationalizing spendings, etc has become vital part of operational strategies in printing business. But at the same time, identifying and tapping all potential sources of workflow in an all-inclusive manner may help printers to face challenging market scenario, apart from generating revenue through innovative value additions.

Till now most of the offset printers were neglecting very short run jobs, terming these as ‘non-profitable jobs’ which are projected to be around twenty percent of total jobs that a printer may receive. A Appadurai, country manager, Indigo and inkjet printers, India and Sri Lanka at Hewlett Packard (HP), reasonably seems right conveying that ‘it is time when offset printers need to focus on bringing non-profitable jobs into profitable zones, leveraging the strengths of digital. So if the printers invest in four offset presses, they should definitely opt an efficient digital press to ensure optimum profitability.’ Unimpeachably, nobody can afford to run the operations in any segment of the industry, if such a significant source of business is left unexploited, then why most of the offset printers continue avoiding it?

Another important area to focus is innovative value additions. There is always immense scope to go innovatively in applications of various printing technologies, be it offset or digital. Further the solutions, as being offered by Scodix, are now available in India to facilitate value added printing. No doubt that such value addition may enable printers to get significantly more revenues for execution of every job.

Ultimately, there is need to transform for living up to the expectations of the customers entirely, offering the solutions innovatively using the combined strengths of conventional offset and digital technologies.
