Organised by Indian Printing, Packaging & Allied Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (IPAMA), at India Expo Centre, Greater Noida, NCR Delhi, the 11th edition of Printpack India (Feb 23-28, 2013) concluded successfully marking a new benchmark of success, in terms of number of visitors and volume of business many exhibitors received. With effective participation of 350+ exhibitors presenting their best offerings, the event provided the platform to the printers from India and aboard to know about the latest advancements in technologies of printing, packaging, converting, signage, and digital segments. Here is a brief. Giving another boost to the graphic arts industry in India, the Printpack India 2013, a renowned exhibition providing an appropriate platform for not only domestic print machinery manufacturers but various global industry majors, closed their doors to be reopened on the same dates after two years in 2015. In this edition of the event, 350+ exhibitors participated witnessing 60,000+ footfalls. On the sidelines of the exhibition, an International level conference was also organized with the joint efforts of NPES (The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies, USA). Asia Print Meet and Printers Day Celebration’ (Feb 24) was another great opportunity for the printers and machines manufacturers to interact with each other and to learn about the current scenario of the industry. KS Khurana, president-IPAMA and CP Paul, general secretary-IPAMA, addressed the participants at Printers Day celebration and updated about Printpack India 2013.

In an exclusive conversation with Print & Publishing, CP Paul, general secretary-IPAMA conveyed, “Despite remote location of the venue, this edition of Printpack India marked another benchmark of success, with 350+ exhibitors, including around 35 from overseas, with maximum number of companies participating in the post-press segment. However, the number of exhibitors was less in comparison with the previous edition of the show. But it made the exhibitors happy owing to greater number of quality visitors (around 10,000 more footfalls than the previous show), and volume of business generated during the event.”

Notably, for ensuring maximum footfall in Printpack India 2013, a series of promotional meets for visitors had been held by the organizers across the country, covering various hubs of the industry. They also endeavoured to promote the show in neighboring countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and in other potential markets like UAE, Kenya and South Africa. Besides, with facilities and other initiatives, the organisers left no stone unturned to prove shifting Printpack India out of Pragati Maidan for the first time adequately fruitful. “It was one of the greatest challenges for us to shift the show to new venue, making the participants ‘feel good’ along with comfort of visitors. And finally this vision of IPAMA worked out well, enabling the event refueling the advancements in the industry at the time when it is shrinking,” added Paul.

Promoting brand India image…

“Through Printpack India show, our aim is to bring printers and machines manufacturers at one platform for ensuring better understanding about ‘brand India’ products. On this line, we are further expecting printers’ specific requirements to identify what types of machines Indian printers need today, and our member manufacturers will develop those machines accordingly, which shall be presented at the next edition of Printpack India. “Besides, to set up brand India image at international level effectively, we may collaborate to organise the show in various developing countries like Nigeria, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc, as these countries have been showing keen interests in brand India products,” conveyed KS Khurana, president-IPAMA, in his message to printers and machine manufacturers.

Through such initiatives, Canon + Océ together tend to create global leadership in their domain providing end-to-end solutions, and we are adding our efforts to ensure greater profitability of our customers in a better way,” conveyed Puneet Datta, director of professional printing products (PPP) division, Canon India Pvt Ltd.

Going with newness …

Puneet Datta, director of professional printing products (PPP) division and Dr Alok Bharadwaj, executive vice president Canon India inaugurating the Canon stall at Printpack India 2013. “Despite the low economic and business environment, technology innovations are continuing to create better propositions in the domain of production and commercial print. After our entry in this space five years ago, we have over 100 high end installations and been able to build annual business worth 100 crore growing at the rate of 15 percent and looking at adding more services as well as acquiring new customers during 2013,’’ conveyed Dr Alok Bharadwaj speaking on this occasion“We have primarily been emphasizing on newness about us rather than introducing new products in the professional printing and wide format segments. However, marking a little addition to our portfolio we also presented Océ 2110 black & white production printer and card ID printer PR-C101 for the first time in India, along with showcasing live demo of our flagship product the imagePRESS iPRC7010VP colour digital production press, at the Printpack India 2013 expo,” he mentions.

Another area being focused by the company is Canon Managed Document Services (MDS) which are also being promoted effectively. Explaining about MDS, Puneet mentioned that it is a complete solution, helping customer to enhance profitability. Three years ago there was no Canon’s customer in this segment but now we have 100+ customers, including top packaging companies in the country. And also, we are not interested in doing partnership in this domain with those who have already been supplying media right since twenty years ago in volumes.”

Greater weightage to service…

“Today, ensuring close geographic reach is one of the major challenges, putting service ahead in terms of importance to satisfy the customizers. With a different approach in this regard, we seek a change, a partner having ‘legal’ to ‘common’ approach, showing loyalty to our brand with a passion facilitating to grow it.”

‘Efficient but economical presses suit Indian market’

-says Timothy Mercy, MD/vice president of commercial web sales for Goss International in Asia, in a brief conversation with P&P on the sidelines of Printpack India 2013 in New Delhi

Derek Low, sales director and Timothy Mercy, MD/vice president of commercial web sales for Goss International in Asia.In India, printers still continue investing in new press while the western markets are saturating. However, Indian market also presents different sorts of challenges for printing technology providers to deal with. But the majors with adequate strengths and efficiency know well how to live up to the expectations of the target customers. That is why Goss International has been offering the solutions which can meet Indian printers’ requirements. As per Timothy Mercy, MD/vice president of commercial web sales for Goss International in Asia, “We offer the perfect solutions to address the specific requirements of this vast and varied market. For commercial printing applications, the capabilities of our M-500 and M-600 press systems make these presses the best suitable options for Indian printers, ensuring value for money.”

M-500 commercial web presses feature proven technology to deliver high print quality, efficiency and reliability at up to 40,000 impressions per hour. Affordability and a straightforward design also make 16-page M-500 presses easy to own and operate, and versatility makes them ideal for companies that rely on a single press to produce multiple formats and jobs. As the world’s best-selling 16-page press, the Goss M-600 press has been incrementally enhanced and modified to ensure its continued position as the reference point for high-quality, low-waste print production. “Since its introduction in the year 1992, we have already installed 2547 units (522 presses) of M-600, out of which around thirty percent have been installed only in Asia. These figures show how successful this press is for Asia, especially for publications,” added Timothy, pointing out the highlighted features of M-600, a unique press. “To make this rather compatible as per the emerging requirements, we upgrade its features regularly,” he said.

“Customers’ needs vary market to market. While there are some customers who require bigger and wider machines up to 96 pages capacity, especially in developed markets, China is a market for 24-page press. In the middle and economical range, we have developed 64 page press. So we are able to cater all types of customers’ requirements, keeping in mind their expectations of the efficient technology at affordable prices,” Timothy mentioned.

Presenting web offset as a viable alternative for folding cartons, flexible packaging, pre-print and label printing, Goss International has also recently launched its Goss Sunday Vpak press series. While the Sunday Vpak 3000 is available in web widths of up to 1,905 mm (75 inches) to address the growing trend towards wider web packaging, the Vpak 500 model is available in web widths of up to 1,041 mm (41 inches). Providing the productivity and print quality advantages of web offset, along with high-tech inking and exacting control over presetting, register, colour and tension, these machines come with the features like quick-change blanket and printing cylinder sleeves to make ‘infinitely’ variable repeat lengths easy and affordable.

“We are further endeavoring to offer more innovative solutions to cater packaging segment of printing,” said Timothy who also joined a panel of speakers discussing the theme ‘Offset and Digital: Complementing not competing’ in the NPES Print Business Outlook Conference, organized concurrently with the Printpack India 2013 in New Delhi. “Book printing application is yet another area of our focused efforts to equip our machines with the best features to suiting book printers’ requirements in economical manner specially suiting to developing countries,” he added.

Success story of basysPrint UV-setters in India!

Installing one platesetter every nine days in India can easily be termed as a perfect success story. It is not just the capabilities of setting organization or the skill of their sales staff but credit needs to be given to the quality of products, which fits into the working culture as per requirements in large perspective. There was a sense of celebration during the recently concluded Printpack India at Greater Noida in NCR Delhi. Christophe Lievens from basysPrint was in town to see for himself and update about Indian print industry. Excerpts from a brief conversation with him.

TP Jain with Christophe LievensWhen was the first sales of basysPrint CtCP happened India? “Well, it was the year 2007, while Chennai based Monotech Systems started handling this equipment and the journey has been fantastic ever since,” revealed Christophe Lievens.

In fact the process behind producing plates is more or less same as the conventional plate making, only difference is that it images directly on the plate without involving the film (positive or negative.) The receptivity level towards CtCP in India equally was created by brand basysPrint. That is the reason there have been more than 40 installations every year. The pricing of CtCP platesetter has more or less remained same over the years, but with the advent of new technology the performance of these platesetters has significantly improved. The productivity of CtCP has reached to the level of 250 plates per hour, the warranty of violet laser diodes have been extended as life time.

As per Christophe Lievens, “As the going trends, run lengths have been coming down with most of the jobs, thus resulting into extended number of plates required on day to day basis. This has resulted into much revenue for the trade-shops in specific. Another significant move which has seen as number of small format and table top printers greatly increased. As such the plate requirements for those printers have continuously been met with CtCP version.

Other significant feature of CtCP over the years has been the introduction of 2400 dpi resolution and the trend towards model preference has been to the tune of 97 percent opting for series 860x and just three percent towards series 460x platesetters. The acceptance level too has been equal with commercial and newspaper establishments. Possibility of 2 up plates imaging for newspapers have been attractive enough to adopt.

It was a matter of pride for basysPrint for introducing basysPrint VLF model as the seventh most innovative product in last drupa,” mentioned Christophe Lievens while concluding.

Kodak: new targets, new directions, focuses INSEA

Bhalchandra Nikumb flanked by Lois Lebegue and Oscar PlanasIndia and South East Asia (INSEA) comprising seven countries brought under single umbrella, Kodak has planned dedicated strategies to attain maximum market share out of the inbuilt growing market. A brief conversation with Oscar Planas, managing director, Southeast Asia Cluster & packaging director & VP APR, Kodak (Thailand) Ltd, Lois Lebegue, managing director, Asia Pacific Region and Bhalchandra Nikumb, head – sales & channel management, India Cluster, Graphic Communications Group at Kodak India during recently concluded Printpack India 2013 in Delhi NCR.

“Having a lot of similarities in seven countries of this part of the world whose culture and life style of people do not differentiate much from one another, their needs and expectations apart from affordability levels are more or less similar, then why not the producers and suppliers treat them as common market and offer ‘just to suit’ products dedicatedly. This is what we have conceived and initiated our specific operations in this region starting this year,” conveyed Oscar Planas.

He further said, “With a central office based in Bangkok, we wish to penetrate this market and see that the printers, convertors are able to achieve good amount of exports out of this region. Kodak has in their plans to update everyone in the region to come forward and take part in knowledge sharing between themselves, understand the range of applications and also look at the feasibility of cross-visits amongst trade shops located in different countries. Though this initiative may not be mandatory to follow, but with this philosophy, they could achieve bigger voice.”

Talking about Kodak’s portfolio Lois Lebegue, managing director, Asia Pacific Region updated that this is the only company in graphic arts segment having large product line which includes their flagship NexPress apart from workflow, proofing, inkjet presses, CtP, Flexo solutions, etc. In nutshell, Kodak do offer complete roadmap for customers incorporating packaging, offset (CtP) and digital.

Catering to the vast markets of packaging, garments and primarily photo industry, NexPress has come of age and is considered to be one of the top few. Offering much beyond CMYK, Kodak’s users are exploring a lot of innovative possibilities which eventually are giving tough challenge to non-print mode of communications. In inkjet category, their top of the line offering Prosper web press comes with all relevant software/workflow and has already entered Indian market at Repro India Ltd in Mumbai. Talking specifically about Indian market, Oscar was happy to see that people here are now investing in creativity and Kodak would wish to be their best partner and play a role of investment guide as well. “We can foresee a fifty percent growth in installations base in India this year, said Lois while concluding.

India: special focus country for Komori

– targets packaging and semi commercial segment

Toshiyuki Tsugawa, operating officer, GGM (Overseas Sales Group) Komori Corporation and Sangam Khanna of Insight Print CommunicationsHaving already supplied around 600 printing units for sheet-fed presses and over 50 units for heat-set web presses in India, Komori from Japan is further set to explore new market targeting packaging and semi commercial segment. Toshiyuki Tsugawa, operating officer, group general manager, overseas sales group, Komori Corporation and Sangam Khanna, director, Insight Print Communications in conversation with P&P editors.

In the current competitive market, everyone is struggling as how best to secure new jobs and even retain the existing clients. As per Toshiyuki, “The solution lies in to reduce your own production cost to maximum extent and this can be possible by adopting newer technologies, newer processes. And Komori offers such solutions very significantly, which include: faster make-ready thus saving on precious paper and consumables apart from time. Within a given time frame, one can produce more number of jobs in case of short run and more number of prints in case of large runs. The maintenance operations offered by Komori also become very beneficial, keeping machines running uninterrupted most of the time. For the value additions, HUV – the proprietary system from Komori becomes handy with reduced cost of UV production.”

“Combination of KHS-AI and HUV reduce the cost of production to 70 percent,” informed Sangam. “In the growing packaging market, more and more jobs being secured by printers, this advantageous offer by Komori has been helping all through the industry. As such opting for machine with UV facility makes more sense. In fact within Japan 70 percent machines are always sold with HUV feature”, he added. Talking further on the Lithrone A37 model and its straight advantages, Sangam justified this to adopt in India, available in and around Rs 4 crore, and catering to major market to handle jobs falling within 25″x37″ format, where is the need to go for 40″ press. Above all this machine comes with the possibility of retrofitting HUV at later stage (but need to pre-inform while ordering).

So, what challenges printers are currently struggling with in India? As per Sangam, though there are not many but to some, these go as: higher rate of interest in financing; missing the level of passion amongst printers and indiscipline in day to day cash flow movement. If these could be addressed in any way, nothing can detract Indian print industry to grow greatly. And the last question answered by Toshiyuki as what made them to opt for a single distributor for all India market, the answer came straight that “one India, one distributor” with single accountability could perhaps bring-in win-win situation for all including the users of Komori presses in all over India.

‘Offset printers need to bring non-profitable jobs into profitable zones with digital’

-says A Appadurai, country manager, Indigo and Inkjet Printers, Hewlett Packard India and Sri Lanka

In today’s competitive phenomenon, print is growing and so are the customer’s choices which have led to increasing number of short run jobs, while simultaneously competition among various brands has led to shorter turnaround time leaving no room for innovation to some extent.

“In the prevailing scenario, there is immense scope for digital printing solutions to play significant role to make the print business continue with increasing profitability. It is the right time when offset printers need to focus on bringing non-profitable jobs into profitable zones, leveraging the strengths of digital. So if the printers invest in four offset presses, they should definitely opt an efficient digital press to ensure optimum profitability,” conveyed A Appadurai, country manager, Indigo and inkjet printers, India and Sri Lanka, in conversation with Print & Publishing during the Printpack India 2013 expo in New Delhi, where Hewlett Packard was once again exhibiting their consistently innovative digital printing technology & solutions, through creative displays.

“By adding the HP Indigo digital solution, one can now make their offset presses more profitable by converting their non-profitable short run jobs into profitable zones. HP Indigo presses are designed to bring in the best possible competitive advantage in a challenging market place. The innovative solutions help commercial printers offer the benefits of digital printing and redefine what is possible for the customers they serve,” said Appadurai.

Displayed at Printpack India 2013, the flagship HP Indigo 5600 digital offset press is a versatile press for the growing commercial business. Seamlessly switching between jobs and media types, the press is ideal with a diverse job mix. While the HP Indigo 7600 digital press is the only digital sheetfed press that can print four million colour pages every month, making it the fastest digital sheetfed press in the market. “Being successful for the Indian market, we have already marked around 135 installations of Indigo presses in India, growing at 25-30 percent per year. Significantly, around seventy percent of our customers have purchased more than one machine from us.” Inspired by this success, we are to further expand our Indigo portfolio by in India adding HP Indigo 10000 press,” he added.

“Apart from striving to further enhance our installation base across the country, we are focusing on increasing page volumes of our customers in a big way, keeping effective engagement with brand owners. Ultimately, we want to ensure that our customers equally grow with us. To help them, we also bring to them the best practices about the HP Indigo applications. Through ‘Dscoop’ platform, Indigo customers can exchange their ideas worldwide,” concluded Appadurai.

Scodix – the star attraction at Printpack India 2013

Like in drupa 2008 where Scodix image enhancement machine was displayed just opposite to HP Indigo booth, now it was in India at Greater Noida during Printpack India 2013 where Scodix S74 machine was demonstrated live not very far from HP Indigo in hall 7. The interest level of the visitors was quite high and Indian industry may witness quite a few installations in near future after having installed two machines (at Chennai and Delhi) with confirmed orders for two more.

Interacting with Dror Danai, VP global sales & business development, Scodix who was obviously too happy to be at the show, and came out with an interesting phrase as ‘it was Gutenberg who was instrumental in evolving movable types to facilitate printing; Steve Jobs, who made history by creating iPad and perhaps next could be Scodix, who is attaining newer heights by introducing print with touch and feel concept which conventional print processes may not be able to produce. Additionally, metallic effects in varying colours have already been made possible to reproduce. As per Dror Danai, these electrifying versions in print will grab most of the printing jobs in near future from most of the established brands. Companies like adidas, Amgen, Audi, Coca Cola, Disney, ebay, Heineken, HP, Mercedes-Benz, ScanDisk, Volvo, etc have already endorsed Scodix effects for most of their print jobs specifically related to the prestigious events.

Scodix image enhancement machine also offers variable data/image possibility which offset process cannot. However, offset printed sheets still can be put into image enhancement with perfect registration by incorporating OPA dot which proves to be the best tool in this regard. Serving both, B/W or colour prints, Scodix machines are exclusively distributed in India by a reputed Chennai based company Monotech Systems Ltd, who will also be supplying the proprietary consumables required.

‘Printers innovate, we just facilitate’

–says Pankaj Kalra, head – graphic communications business, Xerox India in a brief interaction with P&P on the sidelines of Printpack India 2013.

Two big brothers Deepak and Manoj Arora from JMD flanked by Pankaj Kalra from Xerox; Jayant Pardiwala from Nippon Color (distributor of Xerox India), Subhash Chander, past president, AIFMP at the stand of Xerox India.Presently, everyone in the print industry looks for innovations: the end customers prefer to rely upon those print service providers or printers who are able to offer innovative concepts in execution of their jobs. Similarly, printers tend to opt for such printing technologies which can efficiently enable them to meet their customers’ requirements sophisticatedly. This is the phenomenon where Xerox India has now been striving to do the needful for their customers in a big way. Though they did not display machines like iGen at Printpack India 2013 which they had displayed during first IPEX South Asia at the same venue in Oct 2007, but this time the focus was application centric. And it makes sense, as the printers’ community in general ignores the facts related to the vast range of applications they can link to the prints coming out of any digital equipment contrary to conventional offset.

Briefing about their supportive approach and strategies in this regard, Pankaj Kalra, head – graphic communications business, Xerox India, conveyed, “Innovations revolve around print, and it’s the printer who can innovate, our primarily role is to facilitate the process.” The recent trend towards targeting areas like pre-press, where proofing become the dire need before going for mass production, Xerox offers to cater this efficiently. Printers and their clients prefer to see a full colour, back to back print prior to striking a print order. Similarly commercial jobs, with reduced print orders also become most suited on digital platform.

“Ultimately, our target is to enable our customers grow with us. For the purpose, apart from providing the right print solutions as per the need of the customers, we emphasis on three fronts simultaneously: marketing, educating and innovations. While our marketing initiatives help to generate adequate workflow for our customers, education enables them to live up to the expectations of the end-customers. In the same way, we focus on enabling our customers to go innovative in their offerings, by making joint efforts in bringing the best practices happening across the world. It’s Xerox who can help printers to remove the geographical limitations in this regard,” he explained, adding, “Many of the organizations having one or another, their digital machines are churning out theses jobs with offset near quality.

Flexibility in printing…

“With the increasing internet penetration in India, the web-to-print model of business is growing very fast, leveraging the strengths of e-commerce. The establishments, like printbindas.com, offering printing services online, are growing exponentially in India. This channel of printing services allows reaching much bigger customers base. But ability to ensure quality along with quantity in a time bound manner is significant factor to cater businesses through this model. To help in this regard, Xerox has created a network of Premier Partners worldwide. We have also identified six-seven printers as premier partners in India, and more may be added soon,” divulged Pankaj.

Expanding portfolio, strengthening installation base…

Presenting real business live to cater digital printing, commercial printing, photo printing, prepress proofing, book on demand printing, variable data printing and personalized printing, Xerox India continues expanding their product portfolio. While displaying Xerox Color 1000 press, DC 550 and D110 printers, Xerox India also used the Printpack India 2013 as platform to introduce two new products, including Xerox J75 and C75 printers for the first time in India after USA. “Having largest product portfolio in the industry, we can meet all the demands of our customers effectively, with real business solutions and solving real business problems efficiently. We are offering products to all parts of the country. Apart from a number of other products, we have installed multiple dozens of Xerox 1000 machines in India. During the show one of sold machines (Model – Color 1000) was earmarked for New Delhi based reputed pre-press bureau turned offset printer JMD Digital, who have big plans to use this machine in the model of a pre-press bureau by serving printers in a big way in the vicinity of Naraina Industrial Area and around,” said Deepak from JMD. “Commercial printers have realized the current scenario and cities like Imphal, Coimbatore, Surat, etc have been witnessing the installation of Xerox machines,” added Pankaj.

Presline introduces four new products at Printpack India 2013

Pressline introduced four new products in Printpack India 2013. The product which was most demanded and became popular among the prospective visitors has been AUTOMATIC SPLICER with double roll stand. PRESSLINE SPLICER happens to be the most economic splicer in the world which has option of running two full webs with automatic in-feed system. This is exclusively Indian design developed in house by the R&D team of PRESSLINE.

BLANKET WASH is another important device which has been introduced by PRESSLINE. The product has been indigenously manufactured in accordance to the patent registered in United States (Patent no. : US 6,557,470 B1) and has been well tested at the works of International Print-o-Pack Ltd (IPP) in Noida. Since the cost of product is well within reach of printers who have longer non-stop runs on their web offset machines, they will save lot of precious paper and time.

If user of AUTOMATIC SPLICER faces problem of dust deposit on blanket cylinders frequently on account of the fact that most of the Indian papers carry enough dust, the best solution to carry on the non-stop job is BLANKET WASH. Stopping the machine after a few thousand runs and manually cleaning the blanket amounts lot of financial losses.

On cold-set web offset machines, the setoff problem is also very common. PRESSLINE has introduced a MINI IR HOT AIR DRYER system mounted on folder which will dry the ink to a larger extent. This again is the newest concept helping the printers to get setoff free production at minimal cost.

For the first time PRESSLINE has displayed completely SHAFT-LESS TOWER AND FOLDER for perfect control of all four printing sections which help in getting registration with minimum wastage. The shaft less machines have several flexibilities e.g. installation at any level, 90 degree, can keep any portion of the machine silent with least wear and tear and wastage of power.
