Super Labels: barcode specialists in flexography & letterpress

Starting as a screen printing unit, taking up distributorship of ribbons for MICR barcoding, and later producing labels with barcodes, Chennai-based Super Labels has come a long way, shares R Vignesh, general manager of the company to D Ramalingam of P&P.

Situated nearer to Airport at the border of Pallavaram and Chromepet in Nagalkeni Industrial Area in Chennai, Super Labels is run independently by R Vignesh under the guidance of his mother R Mayadevi, who runs the company after the untimely demise of her husband Rajadurai. The enthusiastic lad Vignesh is in ever-learning mood and has been instrumental in the development of the company.

The company was started by his father Rajadurai as screen printing unit in 1992. He even started a weekend magazine. At that time, Sony Ribbons were in demand for barcoding MICR, especially for cheques. Rajadurai took up the agency for these Ribbons, being one of only two such agencies in South India. Slowly, when barcoding found its usage in every product, Rajadurai immediately found out its potentiality in labels, the product bound to expand in all its forms.

Sony Ribbons losing its charm, Rajadurai invested in a Rotary Letterpress & Flexo machines. On his unfortunate demise, a few years ago, his wife Rajadurai Mayadevi took over the reins. Soon, her son Vignesh took interest in the company and started learning the nitty gritty of the operations. Mayadevi says, “I do not interfere in day-to-day activities except guiding with policy decisions”.

To which, Vignesh adds, “My mother gives me complete freedom.” Barcode & labels printing is bound by some security and secrecy parameters; Vignesh is very particular about these ethics. With 30 plus employees, and a 20,000 sq ft built up area, he is careful to flex his arms in every move, not to lose the core product while choosing other products for expansion.”Almost 80 percent of our production is labels,” he shares. Young and energetic, he is updated with technological developments and wish to expand further.
