Think before you leap…

Packaging is one of the highest growing segments in the Indian printing industry, thanks to the ever-growing population of the country in addition to the food processing industry of the country which is looking up greatly. Both these factors have contributed to an upward growth in the packaging segment. As a result, there are a few new entrants apart from a lot of commercial printers having already diversified into packaging and have been installing new machines for the same.

Though it seems to be a viable option at this point of time, it is essential that printers think twice before taking this major leap to avoid making it a beehive where each packaging printer vies for its share. The cut-throat unhealthy competition may severely affect the profit margins in near future.

Also, every new entrant in the packaging printing need to set some goals, whether to be a high-end packaging printer catering to multinational clients, or a low-end one catering to the local markets like toys, agarbattis from tier-2 and 3 cities. Alternatively they can plan to target the mid-segment customers looking for good quality and huge numbers. Those targeting high-end segment need to be equipped with excellent quality infrastructure in order to meet stringent quality standards and high quantum.

Besides, consistency in print and finishing is also a major issue for packaging printers and those catering to high and mid segments need to be very careful about the same.

It is really heartening to note that Indian manufacturers offer a range of good quality machines used in packaging and label segments. A peek into a few of these can be seen at the upcoming Labelexpo India 2014 show at Pragati Maidan, where one can see live demos from Oct 29 to Nov 01, 2014.
