Dr Alok Bharadwaj heads MAIT

New MAIT leadership, renewed focus on domestic IT market and robust manufacturing ecosystem

Canon India’s senior vice president Dr Alok Bharadwaj recently took over as president of MAIT – the apex body representing India’s IT hardware, training and R&D services sectors – for the term 2011-2012. The appointment was announced at the 28th Annual Session of MAIT in New Delhi. In his new role at MAIT, Dr Bharadwaj envisions to bring in a focussed approach for MAIT to ascend its position across the region. His leadership will help in nurturing and progressing MAIT’s dream, of India being the base for global hardware outsourcing – design, development and manufacturing. “It’s always an honour to be leading MAIT. While the current times are quite challenging as growth in IT industry is slowing down, all fundamental and long term demand drivers for the economy are building enormous opportunities for IT industry. India has dominant presence in software and IT services sector, but it is yet to build globally competitive IT and electronics systems design and manufacturing capabilities. The objective of both the industry and the Govt is to commence major transformation for India in the next 5-10 years with a 3-dimensional IT thrust. This can be achieved: firstly, by integrating IT in most of the economic activities to bring rapid improvement in efficiencies; secondly, by significantly contributing to making India, a globally attractive manufacturing base for electronic and IT products with higher level in value chain to cater to increasing demands; and thirdly, by putting environmental care firmly as an integral part of growth initiatives,” he said commenting on the occasion.

“One good big change that is noticeable is a higher level of industry government collaborations and consultations. MAIT is working very closely with ministries of IT, environment, finance and commerce to build growth focussed stronger business as well as regulatory IT ecosystem in India. In the current global economic situation, the focus will continue to be on India. Regardless of companies whether Indian, Japanese, US origin or Korean MNCs, the destiny of Indian is now getting more firmly locked and intertwined for global companies. Hence, there is now a national agenda for all of the industry players to help bring higher level of growth in IT industry in India. MAIT has a very good representation of the industry in its membership and executive council. It will be a pleasure to lead efforts in putting building blocks for a better future,” added Dr Bharadwaj further.
