The countdown has begun for drupa 2012…the pilgrimage of the printing & allied industries is scheduled to be held from May 3 – 16, 2012 at the Düsseldorf Fairgrounds. The heart and engine of the printing and media industry is all set to stage the newest and the best technologies from around the world. Here’s a sneak peek into what’s on offer at this fair.

Life without printing and media is simply unthinkable – books, newspapers, packaging, instructions for use, posters, business cards and tickets are an integral part of everyday life. Even the rise of digital media has not displaced print media, but rather enriched it: the various methods of communication are stimulating one another, opening up new and intelligent opportunities which form our everyday life. Therefore, the international printing and media industry is looking to the drupa 2012 event with a great deal of excitement, the most important and largest trade fair of its sector in the world. Furthermore, whilst in the Western industrial countries the printing and media industry is experiencing a profound structural change, the markets in the emerging countries of Asia and Latin America are dynamically developing.

drupa has been unearthing, explaining and promoting the mega trends of the industry for more than 60 years, has been setting impulses for the development in the next few years and has presented the complete global market offer – and the forthcoming 15th event would be no different. Whether they are global players or striving newcomers and software/IT companies, service providers from the emerging countries or the industrial nations – they will all be represented at drupa from May 3-16, 2012. “The entire trade fair ground with its 19 halls will transform into the biggest printing house in the world during this period. In doing so, approximately 1,850 exhibitors from more than 50 countries will demonstrate the diversity and innovation strength of their industry – regardless of whether this has to do with newspapers, etc, packaging printing, commercial or functional printing,” said Werner Matthias Dornscheidt, president and CEO of Messe Düsseldorf in the pre-drupa media event.

drupa Innovation Park: smart solutions for the media industry

A diverse specialist supporting programme with seminars, conferences and special shows will take up the current topics of the industry and thus complement the exhibitors’ technology services. The drupa Innovation Park 2012, presented by digi:media (dip), will present current, innovative and trendsetting solutions and applications for the entire media industry in Hall 7.0. The dip, with approximately 130 exhibitors, is composed of nine topical worlds. Innovative print products such as lenticular, 3D printing, electronic printing, augmented reality or the “tool kit” for cross-media campaigns, in other words the preparation of content for the media channels of print, tablet PCs and smartphones, will be presented. The special feature is the spatial proximity to the drupa Cube presented by digi:media in Hall 7A – the event and conference location on the topic of cross-media communication.

drupa Cube: trends in marketing, publishing & creation

The drupa visitors will be able to obtain information about trendsetting technologies in the dip, and the neighbouring drupa Cube will provide the associated content and business solutions. At this location everything will revolve around the trends in cross-media, print-based communication for 13 days duration. Print buyers, those making marketing decisions, advertisers, publishing companies and creative persons are invited. Each exhibition day has its own motto, from “Print – Web – Mobile” to the “Day of Corporate Communication” and the “Day of Newspapers”. Whether it is magazines, books, out-of-home applications, dialogue marketing, packaging, electronic printing or media production – on each day there will be a half-day symposium on the various communication models. More information and tickets can be obtained at www.drupacube.de.

Awards (223 numbers) for work from 21 countries were bestowed from 1,600 entries.

drupacity: a city sees red

Since the drupa 2000 event, Düsseldorf has been transforming into the drupacity during drupa. A network of partners from the catering, retail, art and culture trade come together to make the stay in Düsseldorf as pleasant as possible for guests from all over the world. A highlight will be the vessel fit for the high seas, the drupaperboat made by the Dutch paper designer Filip Jonker which will be anchored in the Kö-Graben. The 7.50 m long and 2.65 m wide boat made from 2,000 kilograms of paper with 2,500 kilograms of sand as ballast, has been made extra waterproof for journeys by sea. Besides, in the shopping malls around the Kö, artists will present their work with print and paper for the drupart project – these range from highly fashionable accessories from paper to individually designed pieces of furniture made from paper.

A truly groundbreaking innovation!

Landa unveils nanographic printing for mainstream commercial, packaging and publishing markets.

At drupa 2012, Landa Corporation will unveil its new line-up of Nanographic sheetfed and web presses. The company has announced the unveiling of Nanography, a new digital printing category. The Landa Nanographic Printing process is a game-changing technology for mainstream commercial, packaging and publishing markets. Led by the father of digital commercial printing, Benny Landa, who started the digital printing revolution in 1993 with the launch of the iconic Indigo digital press, Landa is now set to ignite the second digital revolution in print. Landa Nanographic Printing presses offer the versatility of digital with the qualities and speed of offset printing – at unmatched cost-per-page. “It’s good to be back,” says Benny Landa, chairman and CEO. “The Landa Nanographic Printing process is the result of ten years of nanotechnology research. It is a true breakthrough that enables our presses to achieve amazing results.”

Landa NanoInk

At the heart of the Nanographic Printing process is Landa NanoInk. Comprised of pigment particles only tens of nanometres in size (a human hair is about 100,000 nanometres wide), these nano-pigments are extremely powerful absorbers of light and enable unprecedented image qualities. Landa Nanographic Printing is characterized by ultra-sharp dots of extremely high uniformity, high gloss fidelity and the broadest CMYK colour gamut of any printing process.

Nanography – the printing process

The Landa Nanographic Printing process creates images of remarkable abrasion and scratch resistance. Most notably, it can print on any off-the-shelf substrate, from coated and uncoated paper stocks to recycled carton; from newsprint to plastic packaging films – all without requiring any kind of pre-treatment or special coating – and no post-drying. Adding to this cost benefit is the fact that Nanographic images are only 500 nanometres thick – about half the thickness of offset images – enabling Landa NanoInk to produce the lowest cost-per-page digital images in the industry. All of this from a water-based, energy-efficient and eco-friendly process.

Landa Nanographic Printing presses

Landa Nanographic Printing presses employ ink ejectors to create the digital ink images which get applied to the printing stock in a process that can operate at extremely high speeds. Each Landa press, which has an exceptionally small footprint, even when compared to other digital presses, can print in up to eight colours and can operate at 600 dpi or 1200 dpi resolution. The Landa family of six Nanographic Printing presses will be of interest to commercial printers and packaging converters for applications that include general commercial printing, books, magazines, direct mail, labels, folding carton and flexible packaging for food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and more.

Landa to host theatre presentations

Benny Landa will personally be hosting each of the Company’s five daily theatre presentations in its 300-seat auditorium at the heart of Landa’s 1,400 square metre stand, the largest ever for a first time exhibitor at drupa. The theatre presentation, entitled ‘Nano. Bigger Than You Think’, will provide the audience with an inside tour of Nanography – the technology, the products and the opportunity – as well as insights into the future of our industry.
