Print is here to stay!

Editor – S K Khurana Printing is perhaps one of the greatest gift created for the mankind. It is the route to dissemination of information and preservation of knowledge. But, there have been a few challenges in the industry in the recent times, where profitability has been an issue for many commercial printers.

There have been numerous talks about epublishing taking over printing, but is it really true? World over, there are so many book fairs held all through the year…and while ebooks and epublishing are an inseparable parts of these fairs, the number of players in this segment are few…print rule the roost! The recent New Delhi World Book Fair in New Delhi is the testimony to it. Though all publishers are willing to adopt epublishing, it remains a minute part of their activities, the focus still remains print.

But, book publishing industry is not untouched by the digital revolution. POD has made inroads into the industry because print runs are shrinking. Commercial printers need to utilize this opportunity by adding digital printing machines to their set-up. Printers like Repro India are already utilizing this opportunity by installing a high speed digital web press and many more printers are following suit.

The commercial printing requirements have also been shrinking but the need for customized or personalized collaterals has been increasing, which is possible through digital printing.

But, all these do not imply that offset is redundant; it is very much there…there is a need to diversify to maintain profitability and look for newer applications and value-additions. There are numerous opportunities still left untapped…and print is going to stay – for time immemorial!

Wishing you all the continued growth!
