Goss Sunday 5000 presses and the case for 96-page web offset production

Driven by printers demanding a major leap forward in press technology to improve their competitive positions and the value of their printed products, Goss International was the first to respond with the gapless Sunday press concept for high-speed, wide-web production. The Goss Sunday 5000 – the world’s first 96-page web press – is the latest milestone in this visionary effort to maximize productivity, reduce waste and transform web printing into an automated, high-tech industrial manufacturing process. Being in production since 2009 with a web width of 2,860 mm (112 inches), Sunday 5000 presses incorporate more than two decades of Goss wide-web innovation and accumulated process knowledge. Multiple systems in operation and the first repeat order for a second press prove the economic and competitive advantages of the 96-page format, the Goss innovations that enable it, and the ability of Goss International to support successful installations.

Goss Sunday 5000 press installations confirm that printers have been able to install and integrate the new Goss wide-web systems within their workflows and quickly achieve efficient operation and profitably. The 2,860-mm (112-inch) width has proven to be compatible with common formats and page breaks, allowing optimal utilization of the full web width. The first Sunday 5000 presses also demonstrate the ability of Goss splicing, printing, drying, folding, control and process automation technologies to work in concert, allowing extremely high quality and productivity along with low waste in both long- and short-run applications.

Big salute to a real visionary and tech icon

Steve Jobs, founder of Apple passed away on October 05, 2011. With this, the world has lost a pioneer tech icon who transformed the world with his innovative ideas, and we would have expected much more from him in the years to come. His brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve. Along with others, the graphic arts industry can never forget Steve’s contributions which revolutions it through various devices including iPad.

“Steve was among the greatest of innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it. By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world. The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented,” conveyed the US president Barack Obama, in his statement on the passing of Steve Jobs.

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple, said Apple CEO Tim Cook in message sharing the very sad news with all Apple employees. “Today the world lost a visionary leader, the technology industry lost an iconic legend, and I lost a friend and fellow founder. The legacy of Steve Jobs will be remembered for generations to come,” conveyed Dell CEO Michael Dell.

Print and Publishing team offers homage to Steve Jobs who dedicated his entire life to digital communication, directly and indirectly enriching the graphic arts industry in a big way, and would like to follow his footsteps so as to fulfill the desired needs of our ever growing readers.

With whom the world continued expecting much more

In August this year, Steve Jobs resigned as chief executive officer of Apple and was elected chairman of the Board of Directors. On August 24, 2011 in his letter to the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community, Steve Jobs said, “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come. I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee. I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role. I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.”

“Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company. Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration,” said Art Levinson, chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple’s Board, on that occasion.

SS Saini : ready to take new challenges

Generally, it is said that one should not take risk of changing a job after the age of forty, as that is the time to plan for living in a comfort zone with what is available. People do change number of jobs prior to that age and try to hold a good position in organisations of repute. But not with SS Saini, who took a step other way round. By quitting an organisation of repute (Thomson Press) having worked for 29 years, he took a bold decision and started his second inning by joining RSG Solutions. Print & Publishing in conversation with SS Saini during IPEX South Asia 2011 in Mumbai. P&P: Which has been your first job after having completed studies?

SS Saini SS: I completed my Electronics and Communication Engineering in the year 1981 from Punjab and joined Crown TV for just three months. And later joined Thomson Press as trainee for two years in their maintenance department.

P&P: Generally, maintenance of equipment is handled by the suppliers, what was your role in this regard?

SS: Since at that time, most of machines were coming with more of electronics components, especially in pre-press segments, and having a qualified trained person in-house made a sense. This initiative prevented the day-to-day machines down time.

P&P: We understand the qualification part, which you had attained in an engineering college, but how did you manage to get training for sophisticated pre-press equipments like scanners, processers, etc?

SS: Thomson Press arranged for all such training on the shop floor by companies technicians from Dr Hell, Scitex, and Dainippon Screen, who would come to Faridabad at regular intervals. I also attended 30-day dedicated training in Singapore for understanding scanners intricacies.

P&P: And what was your specific assignment, while you left Thomson Press?

SS: In fact, for me there has been a long and interesting journey within Thomson Press. Since I was able to offer myself dedicatedly for any assignment coming on the way, there had been no looking back in terms of my stepping up on the ladder of success. I was heading the ‘digital’ printing department in Okhla (New Delhi) before moving onto taking new job a year ago.

P&P: Having already spent over one year in this new role with RSG, what kind of change or challenges you have observed as against with your earlier role in Thomson Press?

SS: As rightly mentioned by you, the new role is quite challenging, there is always a vision I need to keep open with newer ideas, which can be converted into as a new business at RSG.

For example, the addition of digital printers in the portfolio with Ricoh and finishing equipments from China and Korea apart from table top lamination machines. Entry into consumable by RSG is also on the cards and to start with speciality lamination films, which might being a new revolution in print media with altogether new feel and look.

P&P: One question still remains unanswered, as to what major difference you have noticed working in a bigger vs smaller organisation?

SS: There are lots of new things which can be seen in smaller companies than in the bigger ones. With smaller role an individual has to play that too bound with set of rules and regulations in bigger companies. Sometimes small-small issues are not resolved that fast which can be instantly taken care of in small companies. In nutshell, individuals, with an honest and sincere approach have always much brighter future in smaller organisation and that is what I have encountered after having joined RSG.
