(From left) Thilak Kumar (managing director, Shree Maruthi Printers) with Udo Fiebiger (regional business manager - Heidelberg Asia Pacific), Peter Rego (general manager - sales, Heidelberg India) and Venkataraman (regional sales manager – Heidelberg India).Heidelberg India recently conducted an open-house at Shree Maruthi Printers, where live demos were carried out on the China assembled Heidelberg Speedmaster SM74 press. Three make readies with varied stock thickness ranging from 125 gsm to 350 gsm were carried out. Printers from all over India were amazed to witness a live production of varied jobs with remarkably short make-ready times, very high productivity and versatility. One of the highlights of the demo was a 350 gsm packaging job running at 15,000 iph and within the next ten minutes the press was producing a 150 gsm commercial job. “At an average, 50 jobs are produced and two million business cards are printed and delivered in a day,” said Dr Thilak Kumar, managing director, Shree Maruthi Printers, Coimbatore on the productivity of their newly installed Heidelberg Speedmaster SM74-4H.

After the live demo, Heidelberg India conducted a seminar titled ‘HEI PRODUCTIVITY’ at a hotel in the city. On the occasion, welcoming the gathering, Venkataraman Ganesan, regional sales manager, Heidelberg India, highlighted the importance of delivering value to the print products and mentioned that sustaining growth in a competitive environment is one of the major challenges faced by any printing industry today. Heidelberg has the solutions to overcome this aggressive business trend and help printers remain competitive. Udo Fiebiger, regional business manager, Heidelberg Asia Pacific, gave insights into the press solutions from Heidelberg, particularly the SM 74 offset press assembled in Heidelberg’s factory in China.

Peter Rego, general manager-sales, Heidelberg India and Saseendran Baskaran, assistant general manager-sales, Heidelberg India, touched upon noteworthy subjects in their presentations giving an overview of the products launched at drupa 2012, too. In the last session of the seminar, printers were exposed to various finance options available, enabling them to procure latest technologies.

“Coimbatore has been an important market for us. The market has grown in the past few years at a fast pace especially with the emerging industries like real estate, label, textiles and FMCG. Commercial printing has seen a fast growth in this region. Printers in Coimbatore are more conscious about the quality printing and we have many printers like Shree Maruthi Printers, Kalaikathir Achagam, Hitech Offset, Ace Data and Chroma Print, pioneering the adoption of brand new state-of-the-art equipments from Heidelberg,” added Ganesan.

Primera C130 and Bravo S: an ideal duo for both short runs and long runs

Working with new printed products also means new requirements for print finishing. So after installing a 6-colour Komori press last year, and taking into account that new printed products remain just as important while requirements for print finishing continue to evolve, Consolidated Press in Seattle, Washington has put into operation a Primera C130 saddle stitcher to go along with its Bravo S, both from Muller Martini.

“Due to our new signature machine, we are now able to print superior products including covers, all with the best quality,” says the company’s CEO Gary R Stone who has owned and operated the company that was founded in 1934 jointly with CFO Robert T Brown since 1995. “For the shorter print runs, in particular, we need a new solution that have significantly lower changeover times,” says Bob Brown.

That is why Consolidated Press decided in favor of a new Primera C130, which replaced two older Muller Martini saddle stitchers and complements a Bravo S that was put into operation in 2003. The new machine features six flat pile feeders, a cover feeder, a merchandise tipper, inline die cutting for calendars as well as an Apollo compensating stacker.

Established in Coimbatore in 1954 by Dr GR Damodaran, a doyen of various educational institutions of the PSG group in Coimbatore, Kalaikathir Achagam started its operation as a print-shop for printing an educational magazine named Kalaikathir, and has now emerged as a commercial print-shop. In 1987, Dr Padmanabhan took over the operations and set it on a growth path, with support of his wife Geetha Padmanabhan who takes care of purchase, bank operations and credit management.

Having the entire infrastructure for prepress, press and postpress, Kalaikathir Achagam aims a growth of thirty percent year on year. The prepress, press and postpress processes are integrated with streamlined workflow. “In the postpress section, we have three programmable POLAR cutting machines. We are also equipped with a folding machine, lamination machines, die-cutting and embossing machines, semi-automatic stitching machine, six clamp perfect binding machines, three knife trimmers, spot UV printing machine, label die-cutting and punching machines,” mentioned Dr Padmanabhan. Expanding their current calendar printing, they plan to print exclusive calendars for corporates next year. About fifty percent of its printed products are directly or indirectly exported.

“Forty years back, Kalaikathir Achagam was the only all-in-one-place print-house enjoying a monopolistic position.” remembers Balaji of the company. Even at that time, they were serving all the segments of commercial printing of more than 100 corporates. “Today, we print a variety of jobs like brochures, leaflets, newsletters, stickers, catalogues, posters, wedding invitations, greeting cards and have also recently begun printing notebooks and books. We also print seasonal products like calendars and diaries,” adds Balaji.
