New IIP centre in Guwahati

Ministry of Commerce and Industry has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for setting up of Indian Institute of Packaging centre at Guwahati in the current five year plan. To get the first hand view, Tarun Gogoi, chief minister Assam interacted with the IIP students and IIP Alumni at Mumbai about the work done by the institute, in context of the newly sanctioned IIP Centre at Guwahati.

Prof NC Saha – director, Indian Institute of Packaging said on the occasion, “The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India has sanctioned financial assistance of Rs 5 crores as ‘Grant-in-Aid’ for the setting up of a new centre of the Institute at Guwahati and the State Government of Assam is also exploring to identify a suitable land of 10 – 15 acres at Guwahati. I am very confident that the proposed centre of the Institute will not only help youngsters to get employment opportunities, but also help local entrepreneurs to get rich knowledge in modern packaging technology”.

Tarun Gogoi, said, “The North East region has got many constraints due to its topography, which restricts the movement of the product smoothly. In addition, there is also lack of infrastructural facilities like storage, roads and lack of processing as well as packaging facilities. Due to this fact, inspite of having tremendous availability of resources for agricultural and horticultural produce, this region has not been able to market its products.”

He also launched a book called ’Initiatives’, that showcases what role IIP and packaging technology can play in North East India. IIP is not only an educational institution, but also a support institution to industry. It accepts industry research projects and tests over 7000 samples for national and international standards. Students from IIP also get premium placements across industry.
